What Does Chip Tuning Cost? How Our Prices Are Made Up
ECU generation, power, model year, access: the rules behind our tuning prices, with worked examples you can check yourself.

"What does chip tuning cost for my car?" is the question we hear most, and "it depends" is correct but not very helpful. So here we lay out the rules our prices follow. They are not based on mood or haggling but on a fixed logic: what does the work on exactly this ECU cost? The result is a fixed price you know before you order.
The basic idea: the ECU determines the effort
The effort of a calibration depends less on the car model than on the ECU. An old petrol ECU with a manageable map structure is calibrated faster than a modern diesel ECU with hundreds of maps, a torque structure and exhaust aftertreatment. And a current ECU with signature protection additionally needs a more complex access route.
That is why the basis of every price is the ECU generation. The tiers follow our BMW prices: same generation, same price. A Bosch EDC17 in a VW costs the same base price as the DDE7/8 (also EDC17) in a BMW.
Base prices by ECU generation
| Generation | Typical ECUs | Stage 1 | Stage 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Older petrol | Bosch Motronic, Siemens SIM28/SIM210, Ford EEC-V | 150 € | 200 € |
| Older petrol, late generation | Bosch ME7, ME9, MED9, Simos 7, Trionic 7/8 | 170 € | 220 € |
| Diesel, EDC15 era | Bosch EDC15, VP pumps, Delphi DCM1 | 175 € | 225 € |
| Diesel, EDC16 era | Bosch EDC16, Siemens SID801–806, Delphi DCM3.x | 200 € | 250 € |
| Modern petrol | Bosch MED17/ME17, Simos 8–16, Marelli 8GMF | 250 € | 325 € |
| Modern diesel | Bosch EDC17, Delphi DCM6, Continental SID208/209 | 300 € | 375 € |
| Current generation | Bosch MG1/MD1, Simos 18/19, Bosch EDC17C7x and newer | 400 € | 500 € |

For BMW this roughly corresponds to the order MS4x, DDE5/6 (EDC16), MEVD17.2, DDE7/8 and MG1/MD1. The exact BMW prices are shown in the configurator right next to your vehicle.
The surcharges
Up to three surcharges are added to the base, each with a clear reason:
- Power: +50 € from 300 hp, +100 € from 450 hp. Strong engines leave less room for error and have more maps that must fit together. It is the same logic as BMW M engines versus the regular engines.
- Model generation year: +50 € from 2015, +100 € from 2019. Newer vehicles have more protection functions and a more complex calibration, partly due to stricter emissions rules.
- Opening the ECU: +50 € if the ECU has to be accessed on the bench or in boot mode. This applies whether you visit us or send the unit in.
The result is rounded to the nearest 5 €. There are no other components.
Worked out: five examples
To make the rules tangible, here are some vehicles from our catalogue, Stage 1 / Stage 2:
- Mercedes Sprinter W906 313 CDI (129 hp, Bosch EDC16CP31): EDC16-era diesel, no surcharge → from 200 € / 250 €.
- VW Golf 6 2.0 TDI (140 hp, Bosch EDC17CP14): modern diesel, no surcharge → from 300 € / 375 €.
- Ford Focus RS Mk2 (305 hp, Bosch ME9): late older generation 170 € + 50 € power surcharge → from 220 € / 270 €.
- VW Golf 7 GTI (220 hp, Simos 18): current generation 400 € + 50 € for opening → from 450 € / 550 €.
- VW Golf 7 R (300 hp, Simos 18): 400 € + 50 € power + 50 € opening → from 500 € / 600 €.
An example with the model-year surcharge: the VW Transporter T6 2.0 TDI (Bosch EDC17C74, model generation from 2015) comes to 400 € + 50 € → from 450 € for Stage 1.
Why no flat rate per brand?
Many providers price per brand or per vehicle class: "small car", "mid-size", "premium". That is easy to communicate but reflects the effort poorly. A small car with a current, signature-protected ECU is more work than a large EDC16-era diesel. Conversely, it would not be fair to charge a premium price for an older ECU just because a famous badge sits on the grille.
Calculating via the ECU has another advantage: it is traceable. If you want to know why your price is what it is, the configurator shows the individual items: base, power, model year, access. And if two vehicles share the same ECU, similar power and a similar model year, they cost the same.
Options: a fixed price per function
On top of the stage you can choose software options. Each option has a fixed price, independent of the vehicle. For vehicles outside the BMW online process, for example: Vmax removal 20 €, Sharp Throttle 25 €, DTC Off 25 €, Stage 1+ 25 €, Launch Control 50 €, ECO tuning 50 €. Motorsport functions such as hardcut or popcorn limiter also cost 50 €.
Important: an option can only be booked online if it is technically feasible for the ECU family. If it depends on the software version, the configurator lists it as "on request". We then check it against your file before naming a price.
How and when you pay
For brands other than BMW, the price is a one-time fixed price: no deposit, no second payment. You book online and decide whether you come to us in Stödtlen or send the ECU in. The price is the same either way, because the work on the ECU is the same.
For BMW it works differently, because you flash yourself: today you only pay the hardware (flasher and cable, if ordered) and a 5 € deposit. The software calibration is due once your file is ready, usually within 48 hours. The deposit is credited.
For motorcycles with a Keihin ECU (KTM, Husqvarna, Husaberg) there is a separate price scheme: from 150 €, 200 € with several options, 230 € for multi-map, map switch +40 € or +80 €.
What the price does not include
The price covers the calibration of your ECU. It does not include hardware parts for Stage 2, shipping costs when sending the unit in, or an inspection at a testing organisation. And one legal clarification belongs here: changing the engine software voids the operating permit; our calibrations are intended exclusively for motorsport. Details in the motorsport notice.
Conclusion
Our prices follow a simple calculation: a base by ECU generation, plus clearly named surcharges for power, model year and opening the ECU, plus fixed prices for options. No haggling, no surprises. The configurator shows the exact price for your vehicle, broken down into exactly these items.
