Husqvarna FE 350 to 501: Enduro Tuning by Software
Husqvarna FE 350, 450 and 501 (2014–2016) with Keihin ECU: what the tune changes, how multi-map helps off-road and what it costs.

Since Husqvarna joined KTM in 2013, the enduros of both brands share engines, frame concepts and electronics. For you as an FE rider this means: the software tuning that works on a KTM EXC can be done the same way on many first-generation Husqvarna FE models. On these bikes the engine is run by a Keihin control unit, and that is where the maps live that decide throttle response, pull and sound.
Which Husqvarna models fit
The tune can be configured online for Husqvarna models with the Keihin ECU 812.41.031 (KTM part number 81241031100):
| Model | Years | Displacement | Stock (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Husqvarna FE 350 | 2014–2016 | 349.7 cc | over 45 hp / approx. 37 Nm |
| Husqvarna FE 450 | 2014–2016 | 449.3 cc | approx. 51 hp / approx. 40–45 Nm |
| Husqvarna FE 501 | 2014–2016 | 510.4 cc | approx. 58 hp / approx. 52 Nm |
| Husqvarna FC 250 (motocross) | 2014 | 249.9 cc | approx. 42 hp / approx. 27 Nm |
The FE 350, 450 and 501 were sold almost identically as Husaberg before (2013–2014). We currently do not list a Husqvarna FE 250 as an online-orderable model. If you have one, look at the sticker on the ECU and ask us before ordering.
The sticker is the most important check anyway. The second line must show a number starting with 812.41.031; the last three digits may differ. Later model years and other ranges partly use different control units.

What the software changes on the FE
A stock FE is calibrated rather tamely. There are good reasons for that: noise and emission rules, fuel quality worldwide and a throttle response that does not overwhelm less experienced riders off-road. The power increase revises the ignition and fuel maps. The result is more power and, above all, a more direct response when you accelerate out of tight turns or need a quick burst of throttle at a step.
You choose what it is tuned for. Super 95 runs on any regular premium fuel; that is the safe choice for tours where you do not know which petrol station comes next. The Super Plus calibration uses a little more ignition advance, but then you must consistently fill up with 98 octane.
The sound functions are optional. Pops & bangs crackle and pop on the overrun as long as the throttle is slightly open. Party mode is a hard cut at the rev limiter: ignition off, timing retarded, fuel keeps flowing, and it bangs with flames from the exhaust. For both you set the strength on a scale from 1 to 5.
Multi-map: the real advantage off-road
Off-road, a single calibration is often not ideal. On wet roots or slippery clay you want a soft, predictable throttle response. On a fast gravel section more pull is welcome. With multi-map you assign the four map banks of the ECU freely; a map without an option stays stock.
An example of how riders use it:
- Map 1: stock, for difficult, slippery terrain
- Map 2: power increase, for normal tracks
- Map 3: power plus light pops & bangs
- Map 4: power, strong pops & bangs and party mode for the show on closed grounds
Each map carries its own settings, so map 3 can crackle lightly while map 4 goes all out.
Map switch: stock or our own
Many FE models already have the KTM/Husqvarna stock switch on the handlebar (part number 77239974200, fits KTM and Husqvarna models 2011–2017). It works with our multi-map files but only reaches two maps from the handlebar. In position 1 you ride map 1, in position 2 the map selected on the rotary switch for the base setting. Depending on the model, that sits in the airbox or under the seat. The change is taken over at idle or on restart.
Our own switches reach all four maps directly. Stealth is a 4-way rotary switch in a 3D-printed housing that you hide in the bodywork; it is not waterproof. Clean sits on the handlebar, aluminium with two buttons and waterproof to IP67, the more robust choice for enduro use. Both are still in development. You can pre-order them; they are shipped for retrofitting as soon as they are available.
Prices and process
- one option, always on: €150
- several options, always on: €200
- multi-map: €230
- map switch (with multi-map): Stealth +€40, Clean +€80
There is no file-only option for motorcycles. We read the original software of your ECU, match the file to it and program the unit ourselves. You either come to us in Stödtlen, choosing the date when ordering, or you send in the ECU. Removing it on the FE is quick: seat off, disconnect the battery, pull the ECU out of its rubber holder, unplug the connector. By post the whole thing takes about 3–7 days including shipping.
You will find the product pages with all details for example for the Husqvarna FE 350 and the Husqvarna FE 501. You can put it together and order in the motorcycle configurator.
Stress and legal framework
More power through software changes the load on the engine only moderately. The sound functions are a different story. Pops & bangs and party mode mean unburnt fuel in the exhaust, which puts more load on exhaust valves, header and silencer than stock. On enduros with packing in the silencer, check it more often.
Changing the engine software voids the vehicle's type approval. All functions are intended exclusively for motorsport and are not permitted on public roads, even on a registered FE. More in the motorsport notice.
Conclusion
The Husqvarna FE 350, 450 and 501 from 2014 to 2016 share the Keihin ECU with many KTM models and can be calibrated the same way. The biggest gain off-road is often not peak power but choice: a soft map for difficult sections and a strong one for fast stretches, separated by the map switch. Check the sticker first and your order will fit. Terms like map switch are explained in the glossary.
